In 1883, a Royal Commission, with Lord Napier as chairman, was set up to look at the condition of crofting in the Scottish Highlands and Islands. When the Commission sat at Kirkwall, James Leonard led the Rousay crofters in their evidence regarding the harsh regime imposed on them by their laird, General Burroughs. Napier sought an assurance from Burroughs that he would not take retaliatory action against those who had spoken out against him. Burroughs refused to give such an undertaking, being the only one of the Orkney lairds to act in that way. Shortly afterwards, James Leonard and his large family were evicted from Digro. They later settled at Oban where James, a stonemason to trade, found employment in the coal trade. In Rousay, the Leonards had endured great misfortune through the deaths of several of their children in a diphtheria epidemic, injustice at the hands of the laird, and betrayal by their minister. |

It is said that there were five Louttit brothers in Rousay. They were William above, Drummond, Alexander, Thomas, and Peter. Their parents were Thomas Louttit and Margaret Craigie. William was at Faraclett, where he died in 1862 aged 91. Drummond died at Scowan in 1863 aged 89. Scowan was a small croft below Midgar and is now part of Knarston. Drummond’s son, John, was in nearby Reedlums in the 1870s and 80s. Alexander was at Northouse in Quandal, where most of his children were born. Latterly he was at Lower Blackhammer in Wasbister which, for some unknown reson, underwent a name change in about 1890, becoming known as “The Manse”. He died there in 1871. |
