Hugh, when only 17 years old, took over the joint tenancy of Scockness in 1783 along with his father, Magnus.  In her old age Betsy was asked how many children she had had.  “Ten devils,” she replied.  Thereafter, her sons were known as the ‘Ten devils’.  Both sons named Hugh died young.  The Marwicks were evicted from Scockness after a dispute with the laird over kelp-making.  The Stevensons then moved to Scockness from Stronsay.

All of this family, except John and Margaret, emigrated to New Zealand. Most of them went in the 1850s.  The others, along with their father, went in 1862 after their mother's death.  Hugh and Elizabeth had both married before leaving Orkney.  A son of Elizabeth married a daughter of Hugh, and a grand-daughter of that marriage supplied most of the information on this family.  She is Mrs. Hughna Conner who lived at Molesworth, Victoria, Australia.
RCM wrote an article in 1992 entitled An Emigrant Family, A Devil and His Bairns for the Orkney View magazine (now defunct) about Tammy o 'Woo's family and descendants in NZ.   To read it click here.

Craigie Marwick    F. Hugh Marwick
b. 13.1.1815 in Rousay M. Betsy Sinclair
d. August 1856 in West Boughton, Cheshire
Craigie Marwick is said to have been a sailor on the route from Liverpool to the west coast of America, and that after a fight on the dockside with a shipmate, whom he left for dead, he joined the police force.
That is possibly true, because according to the 1841 and 1851 censuses for England, Craigie Marwick was a Police Officer in Tattenhall, Cheshire.
It is said that Craigie Marwick met his death in a Chartist riot, but this cannot be true as these riots ended in the late 1840s, whereas Craigie was alive until August 1856.
m. 1)  Isabella Elrick at Kirkwall on 12.10.1837
         d. 1840 in West Derby
Issue Janet Balfour Marwick b. 10.2.1839 Liverpool
d. 1840 West Derby
Robert Elrick Marwick b. 23.2.1840 Liverpool
According to the 1861 census for England, Robert Elrick Marwick was an academic – a teacher of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Modern Languages.  Then he simply disappeared from all known records.  Puzzling!
A girl Gillian got in touch with me (JSM) through Rousay Roots to say that in doing family research she had also been puzzled by the "disappearance" of Robert Elrick Marwick from all records after the 1861 Census.  However, she had found the grave of a Robert Marwick who was buried in Ta’Braxia Cemetery, Malta on 30.8.1867.  According to his gravestone, he was about age 30, born in England and a Merchant Seaman.  And according to census records in England, there was only one Robert Marwick born in England who was a “match” for the man in the grave – and that was Robert Elrick Marwick.
It does initially seem unlikely that a man who was a scholar in 1861 could become a Merchant Seaman a few years later.  But Robert’s father Craigie Marwick was said to have been a Merchant Seaman before becoming a policeman, which probably brought him to Liverpool from Orkney.  So maybe it was in the genes, or Robert was possibly working his passage to Australia or NZ and died on the voyage.
On the whole, it does seem likely that the man in the Malta grave is Robert Elrick Marwick, but ................

Many letters written to this couple and their children by their relatives in Rousay and  New Zealand are in the possession of descendants in Australia. One of them, Hughna Conner,  provided me with  photocopies. They provide interesting insights into the lives of the writers and the customs of the times, not only in Rousay but also amongst the early settlers in Australia  and New Zealand.    (RCM)
