James b. 1783 was drowned when his boat sank off Scabra Head. His son, James, also lost his life at sea when the Rousay post-boat was lost in 1893. (See). Maidie was born in 1780 and died in 1863. Her parents were James Hourston and Marian Craigie. Maidie’s sister, Marian, married George Marwick. |
In his book, ‘Around the Orkney Peat Fires’, W.R. Mackintosh relates the story of Hugh Hourston of Sound in Egilsay who was captured by the Press Gang and put aboard a man o’war. A few days later, he was instrumental in saving the ship from danger, and as a reward, was given his freedom by a grateful captain. Robert W. Marwick thought that he was a descendant of Hugh Hourston. He claimed that Hugh was a brother of Maidie and Marian above. |

John b. 1785 was at Hudson Bay from 1806 till 1813. He was at Breck for one year before going to Tratland. It is worthy of note that Newhouse has remained in the hands of the Sinclair family from about 1815 until the present time (1994), an occupancy covering five generations that began with James. In Tratland, John Sinclair and his descendants remained in occupation for six generations. Ownership passed out of the family in 1993. |

| The Sinclairs of Swandale had the reputation of being very careful with money, even to the point of being thought tight-fisted. At the time of his death, in 1884, Robert Sinclair had savings amounting to 900 pounds, an amazing achievement considering that Swandale was not a good farm and that Robert had raised a large family on it. | |||
