In his younger days Nicol Mainland was engaged in the whaling industry in the Davis Straits.  While he was at the whaling in 1822 he had an illegitimate son by Isabel Harrold - James Mainland born 20 Jul 1822 at Pino, Rousay.  The OPR birth record is as follows -

James, natural son to Nicol Mainland, son of Jas Mainland in Cotafea, and Isabel Harold in Pino, son born 20th July and baptised the 27th August before witnesses Christian Mowat, Mother of Isabel Harold being Sponsor of the child, as neither the father, who was absent at the Straits, fishing, and the mother who has not yet been absolved from Scandal, could be so and the child was apprehended to be ill and dying from chest cough.

Isabel Harrold was born 18 Feb 1801 at Woo, Sourin, Rousay of parents James Harrold and Christian Mowat.

There is no trace of Isabel Harrold and son James Mainland thereafter in any Scottish records.  Perhaps James was indeed sickly as suggested by the OPR and he died in infancy.  It has also been rumoured that James survived, but because of the scandal mother and son left Rousay (and Scotland) shortly afterwards.

Nicol Mainland died in 1881 aged 81.  His son Robert Mainland married Margaret Baikie from Cloke, Birsay. Robert farmed Nears for many years and died in 1927.

Marian was the aunt of Hugh Sinclair  who was later in Stenisgorn. He spent his childhood with her at Cogar. The family moved to Falquoy in 1816. The inscription on George’s gravestone states that he was an heir to the estates of Saviskaill.  Records show that there were Marwicks in Saviskaill in the 1700’s. One of them was William, the father of Sir James Marwick who was Town Clerk first of Edinburgh and later of Glasgow. A son of Sir James was a founding partner of the New York firm of accountants, now known internationally, as Peat, Marwick, and Mitchell.
