As  a young man, John went to New Zealand where he worked as a gold miner for 15 years. When he returned to Rousay he married Sarah and settled at Tratland. He and James Sinclair  ran the post boat between Rousay and Evie and both were drowned when the boat was lost in October, 1893. A mother and three children, who were passengers, were also drowned.      See

Peter served an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker in Kirkwall before going to New Zealand with his brothers, John and George. He worked at the gold diggings there. Unlike his brothers, he decided to settle in N.Z. for good.

Peter was one of several Rousay men who obtained work in the Post Office under the patronage of John Louttit. He ended his career as postmaster at Gourock.

The old, and common, pronunciation of the name was Mode, and the spelling often accorded with this. It was gradually superseded by the Mowat spelling.  Milnhouse was situated about half way between the Sourin School and Woo. The last occupants were the Yorston family.

Magnus was born and married during the period when there was a gap in the Rousay records. In a Court case in 1817 over grazing rights on the Head of Faraclett, Hugh Marwick (above) stated that at one time he had been joint tenant of Scockness with his father, Magnus. It is claimed by some that he was related to the Marwicks who were in Langskaill and Saviskaill in the 1700s. There are no records to back up such a claim.
