This family lived on Eynhallow for a time. A stone in the Westside kirkyard bears this inscription:- “To Eynhallow folk Janet Mainland died 1851 aged 16, William Mainland died 1831(?) aged 21, Jane Sinclair, the mother of above died 1852 aged 55, and William Mainland her husband died 1870 aged 75.”

As  a young man, John went to New Zealand where he worked as a gold miner for 15 years. When he returned to Rousay he married Sarah and settled at Tratland. He and James Sinclair  ran the post boat between Rousay and Evie and both were drowned when the boat was lost in October, 1893. A mother and three children, who were passengers, were also drowned.      See

Peter served an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker in Kirkwall before going to New Zealand with his brothers, John and George. He worked at the gold diggings there. Unlike his brothers, he decided to settle in N.Z. for good.

Arthur, William, and the first George died at Digro during a diphtheria epidemic in 1879. Laterly, Frederick was bosun on the N.L.S. Hesperus operating out of Oban. George was a coal merchant in Oban. See.

Peter was one of several Rousay men who obtained work in the Post Office under the patronage of John Louttit. He ended his career as postmaster at Gourock.
