All the Stevenson children were born in Stronsay. The family moved to Scockness in 1830 when the Marwicks were evicted by the laird because of a dispute over kelp making.  A later generation of these Stevensons returned to Stronsay and their descendants are still there. (1994). William Melville of Sanday, came to Rousay to be miller at Sourin.

Cott Mowat stood near the shore on what is now part of the farm of Avalsay, a short distance from Brinian House. William, who came from a poor family, was not regarded by the Stevensons, at first, as a suitable husband for Barbara. He went to Australia for several years and made a lot of money. On his return, he and Barbara got married. “At that time,” he boasted later, “I could have bought out all the bloody Stevensons.”
