All the Stevenson children were born in Stronsay. The family moved to Scockness in 1830 when the Marwicks were evicted by the laird because of a dispute over kelp making. A later generation of these Stevensons returned to Stronsay and their descendants are still there. (1994). William Melville of Sanday, came to Rousay to be miller at Sourin. | |||

Cott Mowat stood near the shore on what is now part of the farm of Avalsay, a short distance from Brinian House. William, who came from a poor family, was not regarded by the Stevensons, at first, as a suitable husband for Barbara. He went to Australia for several years and made a lot of money. On his return, he and Barbara got married. “At that time,” he boasted later, “I could have bought out all the bloody Stevensons.” | |||
