Logie  families

There were two groups of Logies in Rousay and it is thought that they were both descended from an ancestor who came from Westray originally but no written proof of this can now be found.  Both groups lived in the Westside district of the island in the 1840s. One group was headed by John Logie who married Mary Craigie and the other by Alexander Logie who married (1) Isabel Harrold and (2) Barbara Murray. Both John and Alexander were born about1800. It is known what became of two of the sons of John and Mary. One, also called John, married (1) Cecilia Gibson and (2) Jane Harcus and became the laird's yachtmaster. The other, Robert, became a shepherd at the large farm of Westness. He married Mary Murray. Alexander ran a general merchant's business in the westside for a time and lost his life on a boat trip to Kirkwall. His son John, who was a cattle dealer,  married Mary Gibson and their son John was killed in World War 1.

There are many descendants of Robert Logie and Mary Murray, most of them associated with Inganess Farm near Kirkwall which was farmed by George Logie, a grandson of Robert and Mary,  (See also Inkster page.)
